    Why This Recipe Works

Using fresh shrimp is key to this recipe’s success, as it ensures a tender, succulent texture that pairs beautifully with the citrus cocktail sauce. The balance of orange juice and lime juice adds a refreshing twist, while the inclusion of finely chopped cilantro, garlic, and jalapeño brings a burst of flavor that complements the shrimp perfectly. The avocado adds a creamy richness, making each bite delicious.

    Cooking Process

    • Prepare the Shrimp: Start by bringing a large pot of water to a boil. For an added depth of flavor, you can infuse the water with bay leaves, kosher salt, and a splash of dry white wine. Cook the large shrimp in the poaching liquid until pink and opaque, about 1-2 minutes (if fresh shrimp) and 2-3 minutes (if using frozen shrimp). Immediately transfer the shrimp to an ice water bath using a slotted spoon to stop the cooking process and keep them tender.
    • Create the Citrus Mixture: In a large bowl, combine fresh orange juice, lime juice, and tomato juice with finely chopped white onion, cilantro, garlic, and jalapeño. For a richer flavor, add a touch of olive oil, Worcestershire sauce, and a dash of hot sauce or chili sauce. Adjust the seasoning with kosher salt and black pepper to taste.
    • Combine and Chill: Add the cooled shrimp and diced avocado to the citrus mixture. Stir gently to coat the shrimp evenly. Cover and chill in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour to allow the flavors to meld together.
    • Serve and Garnish: Serve the Citrus Shrimp Cocktail in small bowls or cocktail glasses. Garnish with fresh cilantro and lemon wedges. For an extra kick, add a sprinkle of red pepper flakes or a squeeze of fresh lemon juice just before serving.

Tips for the Perfect Shrimp Cocktail

    • Use Fresh Shrimp: Fresh shrimp yields the best texture and flavor. If using frozen shrimp, ensure they are fully thawed and patted dry before cooking.
    • Don’t Overcook: Shrimp cook quickly, so keep an eye on them to prevent overcooking. The ice bath stops the cooking process immediately, ensuring they remain tender.
    • Customize the Heat: Adjust the spiciness to your preference by varying the jalapeño and hot sauce.
    • Prepare in Advance: This recipe can be made a few hours ahead of time, making it a great option for entertaining.
    Can I use pre-cooked shrimp?

Yes, you can use pre-cooked shrimp, but the flavor may not be as vibrant. If using pre-cooked shrimp, skip the boiling step and simply mix them with the citrus cocktail sauce.

How long can I store the shrimp cocktail?

The Citrus Shrimp Cocktail can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. However, it’s best enjoyed fresh to maintain the shrimp's texture.

Can I add other seafood to this dish?

Absolutely! This recipe works well with a seafood mix, such as scallops or crab meat, to create a seafood cocktail.

What can I serve with Citrus Shrimp Cocktail?

Serve this appetizer with a side of crispy tortilla chips or crusty bread for a complete meal.
